Animal workers are some of the kindest, most selfless people in the world. Period. There’s just no two ways about it.

They spend much of their lives doing the thankless job of making sure helpless animals get the love they deserve.

Some of the toughest rescues yield the most incredible stories
Animal rescues all look different.

Some of them are a simple case of a lost dog and others are terrifying stories of abuse. Betsy the pit bull is one of the latter.

Pain and abuse was all Betsy had ever known. Family holds breath as boy moves in for hug from pit bull rescued from dogfighting ring

As a pit bull, Betsy was bought by her owner for one thing: to fight other dogs. Good fighting dogs have aggression and a natural lack of fear of other dogs.

Betsy didn’t make the cut. She was too gentle and affectionate to make a good attack dog. The good-hearted dog just wasn’t aggressive.

Unfortunately, it was used for something more sinister. A bait dog is a dog that is sent before a fight to annoy all the fighting dogs.

Essentially, these are chunks of meat that larger dogs mutilate to feed their bloodlust. To be frank, bait dogs don’t last very long.

By the time rescuers reached Betsy, her condition was critical.

The sweet and affectionate dog was not well. She had wounds all over her body and things weren’t going well. Some of the injuries were so severe that the medical team weren’t even sure she would survive.

Either way, they worked in surgery. She had wounds all over her body and infection was a serious concern.

It wasn’t just about stitching up all her wounds, it was about making sure she was clean and hygienic, or else her life would be in danger.

She was in terrible pain but she still clung to life during the procedures.

Slowly but surely, Betsy moved on with her life.
