Dog suffers 2 strokes and can no longer climb stairs, so family takes turns sleeping with him downstairs

They couldn’t bear the thought of him being alone and alone down there. 😢

Spike is a rescue dog who was adopted into Catherine Morris’ family in Yorkshire nine years ago. The family had decided that Spike would stay downstairs and not be allowed upstairs, but he had a different idea. He didn’t want to let his humans out of his sight. Catherine said:

“The first time we had it, we closed the door to the stairs and went to bed. He whined for a few minutes before jumping out the door in the dark and scampering into my parents’ bedroom and straight onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on. »

According to Catherine, Spike likes to snuggle up and when he sleeps in bed with them he will try to push himself under the covers so he can be as close to his humans as possible. However, Spike is fourteen now and has had two strokes, so he is no longer in better health.

For days after Spike’s second stroke, he couldn’t fend for himself, so the family carried him into the house. When he learned to walk again, he was still too weak to walk up and down stairs.

Lest Spike injure himself while going up and down the stairs, the family installed the stair gate again. Another precaution they took was to start sleeping with him on the couch so he wouldn’t try his old trick of jumping out the door. Katherine said

“This new schedule started when I was in college, so my parents spent alternate nights downstairs with Spike. Since I got home I joined the rotation, so overall we get a little more sleep between the three of us. »

Catherine’s dad goes the extra mile to make sure Spike is comfortable and has everything he might need during the night. A true testament to the old adage that a dog is a man’s best friend. She said :

“They are inseparable. My dad calls him «old bean» and they always gossip. My dad will also bring Spike his water and food to the couch and hand feed him to make sure he gets his meds and keeps his strength up.

Catherine and her family document Spike’s life on their Instagram profile: @spikethespringer where you can see how much he is loved and how many people have followed.

There are photos and videos on his profile from when he was younger and full of life and also a few posts where he slowed down a bit but didn’t lose his love for chew toys. It is clear that his health problems do not bother him. According to him, only his humans are holding him back. Catherine said of Spike that:

“We love our old boy so much and are so happy to have him in our lives. I hope we made up for her bad start in life by providing her with all the love in the world.”
