A woman saves a baby squirrel and he refuses to leave her: they become friends

OTHER ANIMALS

My childhood home was built on former farmland where oranges and avocados were grown in Orange County before it really became a suburb.

Given its location, my parents have quite a few orange and avocado trees on their property, which means we’ve never had to buy avocados or oranges – something I sorely miss every time I go to the grocery store these days.

But it wasn’t just my family who enjoyed the avocado and orange trees on our property. Every year, several families of mockingbirds built their nests in the trees.

This meant that every spring we found ourselves saving at least one nestling that had fallen from its nest.

This is the risk that comes with life inside a tree. Sometimes small baby animals end up falling off the tree. For the most part, their mothers come to the rescue, but sometimes they don’t.

This seemed to be the case with a small baby squirrel named Bunk.

The little squirrel was found by Patty Robinson, who took it in when she found it an orphan.

As GeoBeats Animals/a> reported, Robinson first welcomed Bunk with the intention of raising him only to eventually be released into the wild.

However, this did not seem to be the plan in the end, because the little squirrel had no intention of ever returning to the wild. Bunk seemed to want to stay with Robinson.

As Robinson explained to GeoBeats Animals, «I had every intention of letting him go freely… I tried three more times to let him go and he didn’t want to leave… »

Rather than let him fend for himself in the wild when he wasn’t leaving, Robinson decided to welcome Bunk.

She allowed him to live his life as an indoor squirrel, but she made sure to make it as special as possible for him.

That’s when she built an extravagant treehouse for the lucky little Bunk so he could run and climb as he pleased.

As Robinson added, «As an artist and builder, I said okay if you can’t be in the trees, I’m going to make him a tree.

I built him a treehouse entirely intertwined with his favorite wood species. It has the largest room in the house, eight sliding glass windows and cathedral ceilings.

He can run around the room without touching the floor safely as he is on all his little ramps.
